Now it has happened. My first serious athletic injury in 16 years of competitive sports. Some crashes with the bike (a worse on in 2005), an Achilles tendon irritation before and during Hawaii 2004 and a tract irritation at the tender age of 18 were my most dramatic bruisings so far.
After I had recovered well from the race in Abu Dhabi I wanted to start full speed in the next part of the season. But with my age it seems to be that you have to be more carefully.
Since today it is certain: fatigue fracture in the pelvis. I could not run for 4 weeks already and there will probably another 4 weeks of a running break. The reason that it took so long to do a magnetic resonance tomography and to get a diagnosis was my pain sensitivity. Mine seems to be different than from other people. At first the doctor as well as the physiotherapist did not expect such a heavy cause.
The comment of the radiologist was: “Other patients with that fracture do not walk in here they are usually brought on a bed.”
Until now we are dogged by bad luck. Pete (fracture of the collar bone) and Rachel (transection of 3 tendons in the food) are well on the way to recover but they still cannot race. But I am convinced that we will perform well in summer and at the end of the season.
