The weather conditions in the southeast of the USA are always pretty hard to forecast. But usually it starts to get cold at this time of the year. 2010 there were also high waves in the Golf of Mexico. This was not the favourite swimming condition for Swen but still he came out of the water in the first group. But he likes a flat and windy bike course. And that he found in Panama City. A squad of 10 athletes formed the chasing group on the bike following the French leader Guillaume. All of them stayed in the group the entire ride. Swen tried to attack a few times but in the end it was better to stay with them. He had also his good run shape in mind. It worked well the weeks before the Ironman and he did a lot for running. So he started the marathon fast and he was in a good position until the half marathon mark. But then he bonked and had to slow down. The second part of the run was a torture for him. But he finished and crossed the finish line as 10th. The South African Cunnama, who rode with Swen, had the fastest run split of the day and won the race in front of the Portuguese Gomez and the Luxembourger Bockel.
It was not the way Swen wanted to complete 2010 but still there was something positives for him: “I am proud that I finished the second run loop. It was not really running any more. I started too fast but in such a race you have to take a risk. If it would have worked I could have had a great result.”
