A victory every weekend (08.05.2011)

Rachel Joyce won the Vulcano Triathlon on Lanzarote, in the meantime Jan van Berkel got 32nd in Mexico at the ITU World Cup and Faris Al-Sultan was 8th in Buschhütten.

A few days ago Rachel arrived on Lanzarote to do some training under better conditions than in her hometown London. Just shortly she decided to do the Vulcano Triathlon which was organized already for the 27th time. For her it just should have been a training race without any tapering. So she surprised many as she bet all the other women quite clear with more than one minute. She set the base in the water and gave the lead never out of her hands. After Rachel Eva Ledesma crossed the finish line who just won the Half-Challenge on Fuerteventura.

It should not have been a training race for Jan. He came directly from some trainings weeks on high altitude in California. The field at the ITU Triathlon World Cup was a strong one though not all the top ranked guys were there. During winter Jan worked a lot in the water. And it seems that it has positive impact. The gap to the leader was just a few second. Almost all athletes could close that gap on the bike. Sadly it was not Jan’s running day. He lost 2,5 min on the last discipline which means the 32nd place overall.

Last but not least Faris started this year’s Germany season in Buschhütten. For many years strong short distance athletes fight here against fast long course guys. So Faris started the race with a solid swim performance. The bike part was not good but it was expected like that by the guy from Munich. The races in Abu Dhabi and Singapore took more out of him as he wanted. So he needs some more bike kilometres to have again enough pressure on the pedal. Faris is convinced that that will happen soon. But his run shape is already perfect. So he could finish in the end as 8th whereas Sebastain Kienle took the victory already for the 4th time. The decision was made on the run as Kienle left Andi Böcherer und Dirk Bockel behind him.
